Age groups for road running competition
Age limits for road races are based on the maximum distance a person is allowed to race under the rules. The maximum distances are as follows, age is on the day of the race.
Over 11 – Under 13 4000m
Over 13 – Under 15 6000m
Aged 15 – 10000m
Aged 16 – 16000m
Aged 17 – 25000m
Over 17 – Under 20 Marathon
Over 20 – Unlimited
For Championship competition such as road relays age groups are used. The competition year extends from 1 September to 31 August in the following year.
Under 13
Road Running competitions are confined to competitors who are aged 11 or over on the day of competition, or 12 on 31 August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year.
Under 15
Road Running competitions are confined to competitors who are aged 13 or 14 on 31 August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year.
Under 17
Road Running competitions are confined to competitors who are aged 15 or 16 on 31st August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year.
Juniors
Road Running competitions are confined to competitors who are aged 17, 18 or 19 on 31 August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year.
Seniors
For Road Running competitions a Senior is a competitor who is aged at least 20 on 31 August prior to the commencement of the Competition Year. In Road Relay competitions Junior Men and Women, as appropriate may compete in Senior events.
Masters (Veterans)
Road Running events for Masters shall be confined to competitors who are at least 35 years of age on the date of the competition. Masters then compete in 5 year age groups, again the athlete must be at least the specified age on the day of competition.
